I’m in Phoenix, Arizona. Outside my window they’re putting up the tent for John McCain’s Tuesday Night Rally. I just spoke about Grace at the Kidney Foundation Luncheon. A wonderful, classic event that rates among the best writers’ events in the world. With me were Gregory Maguire (author of Wicked-the book and Broadway play), Anita Shreve (author of The Pilot’s Wife, Testimony), Robert Crais (Thriller writer of Chasing Darkness) and Marilyn Carlson Nelson (A lovely woman who wrote How we Lead Matters-Forbes named her one of the 50 most powerful women in America) I was completely blown away by my fellow authors. This was truly a thrill and one I will never forget. Just as exciting were the very influential people who stepped forward to say they’d like to sponsor our Christmas Box initiative for Foster Kids in Arizona. I feel as if God completely opened this up amazing opportunity to serve His children. Also, my father came. My father, who is in stage 4 of chronic liver failure, hasn’t seen my speak in years. What a thrill to have him and my sister in the audience. I feel truly blessed.

I’m in St. Petersburg, Fla and I go home tomorrow. I can’t wait. I really miss Keri and the kids. This leg of the tour was exhausting but it was so good to meet my friends in Detroit, Ft. Wayne, St. Louis, Louisiana and St. Petersburg, Florida. One of my readers emailed to thank me for coming and wrote ‘it must be difficult to meet with all these people’. Actually, that’s the good part. I had a horrible time in Ft. Wayne until I got with my fabulous readers who always lift me up with their love. The same held true in every other city I visited. In Alexandria, Louisiana we dedicated the 89th Christmas Box angel monument. Pam and Bob Schroeder, who sponsored the angel statue, were wonderful hosts. I had some of the best food all year at the Bayou Bistro. No wonder U.S. Presidents flock to the place. The 90th angel was dedicated the next day in Michigan. We also just received orders for angels in Japan and France. The miracle of the Christmas Box Angel continues. If you are unfamiliar with the angel monuments there is more about them on the homepage. Just click on ‘Angels’. Yesterday I received some sad news. Darlene Jorgensen, the owner of Jorgensen’s Books in Roy, Utah passed away on Friday. Darlene was one of the first book store owners who rallied to support an unknown author with a little self-published book called The Christmas Box. Her store still holds the international sales record, selling an amazing 5,000 copies of The Christmas Box that first Christmas. With her Beehive Hairdo and strong will, Darlene called countless independent bookstores around the nation and told them to promote my book–or else! I don’t know what would have happened without this wonderful woman’s support, but I’m glad that I don’t know. Like so many independent bookstores, Jorgensen’s Books shut down about five years ago. But I’ve never forgotten how supportive this wonderful woman was. I’m honored to be asked to speak at her funeral. I send my condolences to her husband and family.

I flew out of Salt Lake at Midnight, arrived in New York at 6 a.m. After a nap I went over to the CNN studios. Our cab driver was lost so I was late. As they rushed me into the makeup room we were stopped by Secret Service. Michelle Obama was inside. The Glenn Beck people insisted that I be admitted, so they took me in. I sat down in the chair next to Michelle Obama while Larry King talked to her and I got my face airbrushed. Glenn Beck was terrific and told America to run, not walk, out to buy GRACE. Thanks to allof you who have come to my first signings. You are beautiful. Someone gave me a mini-video camera for my birthday, so I’m recording my book tour, which I’ll post in December. All my best from the Big Apple!
